Look, we get it. You’ve tried press-ons before and they lasted approximately 14 hours before one popped off during a Teams call.
Here’s the thing: press-ons can last up to two weeks (sometimes longer) when you use the right glue and don’t skip the boring prep steps everyone ignores.
We use the strongest glue on the market at Mani Edit Co. But even the best glue won’t save you if you skip prep or treat your nails like tools. Here’s how to make them actually last.
Start with proper prep (this is where most people fail)
Your nails need to be:
Clean. No oils, no lotion residue, nothing. Wipe them down with the alcohol pad in your kit.
Pushed back. Use the cuticle stick to gently push back your cuticles. This gives the press-on more surface area to bond.
Lightly buffed. Not filing your nail down (that’s what salons do and we’re not about that). Just a quick buff to remove shine so the glue has something to grip.
If your nails are oily or you skipped the alcohol wipe, you’re basically asking them to fall off.
Glue vs tabs: pick your wear time
Adhesive tabs:
• Last 1–5 days
• Great for weekends, events, or when you want to switch looks often
• Easy removal (just peel and go)
• Best for first-timers who want to test the waters
Nail glue:
• Lasts up to 2 weeks (sometimes longer if you’re careful)
• Uses the strongest adhesive on the market
• Needs proper removal
• Best when you want them to stay put through real life
Our take: If you’re going to an event or want to test a new set, use tabs. If you want them to survive work meetings, gym sessions, and everything in between, use glue.
Water exposure: how much is too much?
Press-ons can handle water. What they can’t handle is prolonged soaking.
You’re fine with:
• Washing your hands normally
• Quick showers
• Doing the dishes (gloves help)
You’re asking for trouble with:
• Long baths (especially hot ones)
• Swimming for hours
• Soaking your hands for extended periods
Water loosens the adhesive over time. If you know you’ll be in water a lot (beach holiday, spa day), expect slightly shorter wear time.
Daily care tips that actually work
-
Treat your nails like jewellery, not tools
Don’t use them to open cans, peel stickers, scratch surfaces, or type aggressively. -
Apply cuticle oil daily
This keeps the edges flexible and helps prevent lifting. Just a small drop around each cuticle before bed. -
Avoid excessive heat
Hot yoga, saunas, and very hot water can weaken the bond. Not saying don’t do these things — just know they may reduce wear time. -
Fix lifting immediately
If one nail starts lifting at the edge, add a tiny drop of glue underneath and press down for 30 seconds. Fixing it early stops it catching and ripping off completely.
The biggest mistake people make
Ripping them off when they’re ready to come off.
Even if they’re loose, don’t yank them. Soak your nails in warm soapy water, apply cuticle oil, and gently slide them off using the cuticle stick. Ripping damages your natural nails and then press-ons get blamed when it’s really just bad removal.
Bottom line
Press-ons can last just as long as salon nails when you:
• Prep properly (don’t skip the alcohol wipe)
• Choose glue for long wear, tabs for flexibility
• Avoid prolonged water exposure
• Treat them like the investment they are
